Sébastien GAUDETTE

Sébastien Gaudette is an artist who lives and works in Montreal (Canada). After his university studies in visual and media arts at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQÀM), he began his research around the medium of paper, exploring the multiple facets of paper crumpling, from which he creates perfect trompe-l'œil through drawing, writing and sculpture.

Gaudette's work has been exhibited in various venues in Quebec and Canada, including the Museums of Fine Arts of Sherbrooke and Mont-Saint-Hilaire, the Museums of Bas-Saint-Laurent, the Centre national d’exposition de Jonquière and the Cirque du Soleil. He has also participated in charitable events, including the auction of the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal and the Musée d’art contemporain des Laurentides. On the international scene, he has been invited to exhibit at the Art Helix Gallery in Brooklyn, in addition to having presented his work at several international fairs, including Art on Paper in Miami, Seattle Art Fair as well as the Papier Art Fair in Montreal. The artist has also completed several research residencies in Canada and the United States which have allowed him to explore his creative process in different contexts. Some of his works are now part of public and private collections.

The artist's work is represented by Robertson Arès Gallery (Montreal), by Subject Art Gallery (New York) as well as at the Goutal Gallery (France).

His artistic practice revolves around the medium of paper, exploring the relationship between sculpture, installation and drawing. His concept is to graphically create a dialogue where gesture is constantly used to leave a simple imprint, a trace of a movement, an evolution towards a more complex form.

His sculptural work borrows from a variety of techniques, materials and tools. To describe it simply, he meticulously shape rigid aluminum plates to create perfect paper trompe-l'oeil. His drawings, on the other hand, leave room for improvisation and error in the gesture, but are worked with realism and great precision.

Paper is not only a two-dimensional surface. It is a material that can be shaped to create pictorial compositions with complex shapes and dimensions. His explorations around this subject allows him to constantly redefine the terms and limits of a whole new language, even new narrative dimensions to paper.

Sébastien Gaudette explores the limits of paper through sculpture, installation and drawing by creating realistic trompe-l'oeil. In this way, he breaks out of the two-dimensional relationship with paper and continually revises the different perspectives of this medium.

In our interview last year at his Art Souterrain: Créer des ponts residency, Gaudette reveals his previous background in architecture and visual and media arts that led him to his current practice.
